About the artist: I am seeing a lot of images of world events that I am too far away from, to fully comprehend. I am using painting as a device to intervene in some of these images, to better understand them.
I have fractured a newspaper image of the London bus bombing, in an attempt to diffuse such a loaded image, seeing how it operates as an aesthetic object.
I have rescued a painting from a dumpster, hacked into it, and re-layered it with a memory of my family home.
I toy with the dread that I associate with Middle East iconography, by painting girls in hijab as though they are barely there.
Aeroplanes act as a symbol of S11, but are still replicated as baby spoons, and I examine such a conflated object, by painting it from life.
My project is one of personal translation and reflection. I hope viewers can find their own narrative somewhere between these fractured, disparate paintings.
