Paul Carter

About the artist: I have had a passion for portrait drawing and painting all my life. Over the years there has hardly been a family member or friend who hasn’t been coerced into sitting. Even during all the years when I had a very busy medical practice I kept my hobby ticking over.

Over the years I have tried a variety of media: crayon, chalk, charcoal, watercolour and oils. My two favourites are chalk and oils. The works submitted to this exhibition are all in oils.

I believe that portraits should not simply be photographic representations of subjects, but have something interesting and even profound to say about them. The work should attempt to reveal the inner soul, to tap into the very essence of human experience. A great deal of time is spent deciding what it is that I wish to say about the subject before even performing preliminary sketches.

To facilitate this approach, I work a lot from photographs which are able to capture people laughing, being sad, being caught unawares. In addition, personal sittings are, of course, always an essential part of the process.

For a number of reasons, I have recently semi-retired from clinical practice. One of these reasons is to allow more time to paint.

Exhibitions: “Windows” is my first exhibition and, in some senses, the beginning of a journey.

I am excited to see where this journey will lead me.
