Adriano Avila

About the artist: Photographer Adriano Ávila reveals a new way of seeing Brazil in his upcoming exhibition entitled “Brazil of John Smiths” at Galeria Arte Brasil of the Consulate-General of Brazil in Sydney.

The exhibition comprises images of traditional communities throughout Brazil isolated from the big cities and now almost extinct. Small villages, Quilombos, fishing communities have all become little islands of cultural preservation, through their faith, simplicity and harmony with nature and things common to life.

The images reflect the fabulous culture of a people of so many “John Smiths”, the common folk, who bring us closer to our roots inviting us to question the direction of the modern society in which we live.

Internationally renowned photographer, Adriano Ávila, has exhibited in several galleries in Brazil and abroad. His work has a social tone following popular culture by documenting the Brazilian people’s conflict with the time and the space in which they live.
The exhibition will open on 18 June 2009 and runs until 29th September 2009 at Galeria Arte Brasil in Sydney, Australia.
